VPN Services

What is a VPN?

An AlwaysONLINE Virtual Private Network, or VPN service, allows networks across Australia (and overseas) to connect together securely.

By being part of a VPN, data can be securely exchanged between your offices. AlwaysONLINE can connect your business and staff across Australia using the latest in data technologies such as ADSL, SHDSL and dial, wireless or ISDN in more remote areas.

What can I use a VPN for?

A VPN will allow you to connect together any of your offices within Australia. The networks at each site become joined together, allowing sharing of resources such as printers, file servers, e-mail services and group collaboration tools in which your organisation has already invested.

Where can my VPN sites exist?

Depending on the access type chosen, your VPN sites can be anywhere in Australia. ADSL can be chosen at any ADSL enabled exchange. SHDSL coverage is provided in most cities. For truly remote sites, V.90 dialup access or mobile access via GPRS or UMTS mobile data services will help bring your network together.

Why wouldn't I just use the Internet to share resources?

A VPN provides a level of security which the Internet does not. Only sites which you specify gain access to other sites. Our network based VPN approach allows security policies to be changed centrally, without requiring reconfiguration of any equipment on your network. This approach reduces downtime, and allows easy enforcement of security policies across your network.

Why is this better than "broadband VPN routers"?

"VPN routers", often sold as all-in-one boxes for remote offices become difficult to effectively manage as your business grows. The centralised network approach used by AlwaysONLINE allows a central enforcement of policy across your network.

For example, an AlwaysONLINE VPN allows a scenario such as:

Of course, your network may be less complex, but AlwaysONLINE VPNs allow a huge degree of customisation of your network policies, all without having to reconfigure a single router or device on your network.
